Texting, popcorn, Advil, textbooks, wine, gas, mini-bars, hotel movies: the necessities of life, right? I’m sure at least one of these products or services are a regular purchase in your life. According to an article written on CNNMoney.com, you’ve been ripped-off.
Let’s break down the rip-off’s real quick:
Text messages: 6,500% markup
Movie theater popcorn: 900%
Free credit reports: freecreditreport.com = $14.99/month (not so free!)
Brand-name painkillers: 60% markup
Wine at restaurants: 500% markup
Textbooks: $900/year
Super gas: 15% markup
Hotel mini-bars: 1,300% markup
Hotel in-room movies: 200% markup
Movie theater popcorn: 900%

So the biggest rip-off winner goes to: text messages. Who would have known text messages were a 6,500% markup? Apparently those texts from last night cost carriers one-third of a cent each to deliver. Even customers who think they’re saving money by signing up for an unlimited texting plan are being ripped-off. No wonder all my “crackberry” friends are bbming (blackberry messaging) all the time.
